This portfolio is generally related to various techniques to provide location based services, share presence information to multiple user devices and determine contextual information to display visual media data. Disclosed is a technique to monitor users mobile devices to determine location information and periodically receive position information to update location data. The system associates each periodically received position information with a time data and determine a number of stops made by each user, duration of each stop and duration of travel time between two stops. A set of patents in the portfolio discloses an area event location services to provide notification when a predefined area event occurs. The system sends notifications to target mobile device when the mobile device enters or exits a predefined geographic area. Also disclosed is a technique to characterize digital media by analysing received media and extracts information to form the extrapolated information. The technology may be implemented in vehicle tracking system, mobile location reporting system, navigation system, media analysis system, visual media analysis system, etc.
